Sociology Update

This week we learned about social deviance. Deviance is an act that someone does that violates social norms. There is two types of deviances that we learned, negative and positive. A negative deviance is an act that is done that has negative effects. Some negative deviances are underage alcohol, drug use, drag racing, speeding, and other things that are against the law or norms. Positive deviances are acts that affect people in positive ways. Some positive deviances are helping someone, allowing services, and things that people appreciate that can help them.
We also watched the potato chip hero clip, and read the teenager robber story. Both of these articles have examples of positive and negative deviances. The negative deviance in the potato chip hero clip is the wife and the husband fighting on the subway in front of all the people. The positive deviance in this clip is the random stranger stepping in and giving the couple a chip to get their mind away from fighting and also stopping them. The negative deviance in the teenager robber article is that the teenager stops the man and holds him at his will with a knife for his money. The positive deviance is the man who was being robbed offered the boy his coat so he wouldn't be cold and then he took him to supper and paid for him.
My positive deviance was fixing Kayla's license plate on her car. Her license plate bracket was broken for a while and while I was out on senior privileges I saw it, grabbed my tools, and fixed it for her. Her reaction was happy and thankful because she said it was bothering her that it was just hanging like that for a while.

  1. It was nice of you to fix her license plate bracket for her. It feels good to do something positive for someone when they don't expect it.
